Saving energy at home has now become a trending issue on the global level and developed countries are also researching sustainable fuel energy that could power their homes, industries and business for 24/7 hours. Russo-Ukrainian War has also caused a blockade of the petroleum supplies to Europe which has had a huge impact on the economic sector of the European Union. The semiconductor materials have also been rare for companies to mine, as they are the main component of Solar cells, prices of Solar panels have been raised up to 40% due to low supply. Europe is facing power outages and high electricity costs. Europe is struggling to make electricity affordable for every citizen, but the double electricity billing suggests that it is hard for them to cope with expensive fuel shortages. In this article, we will discuss golden ways how to save energy at home and how we can conserve energy to save on electric bills.
So, it is still a question that how can we save energy? How can we save energy in our daily life? Don’t worry, just follow our Golden Rules to Save Electricity and lower your electric bill.
1. Never put your devices on standby mode.
Being on standby means, that your electronic home appliances are not being utilized but are consuming electric power. In this mode, appliances consume less energy, but it would be foolish to keep your items turned on even when not using them completely. For example, if you make your laptop go to sleep, it drains low power while in sleep mode, but it reduces your notebook's battery life cycles. And it is disastrous for expensive home appliances when power surges or drops occur.
You may turn off your computer, laptops, and home appliances like microwave ovens, water dispensers and WIFI devices during night. In this way, you may cut your electric bill by up to 35%.
2. Turn off all the unnecessary lights and appliances that are rarely used.
Make sure that you and your roommate or family members turn off the lights and home appliances when they leave the home or place. Also, turn off the lights in the garden and play area when not in use. Limit the use of the old lighting devices that takes up a lot of power and go for the smart lighting options that offer sensor features that turn them on when someone arrives, or they can be remotely controlled.
Use an energy saver instead of ordinary lights. Wait…Energy savers are the things of the past. In this era, we are surrounded by efficient lighting systems that emit more visible light and less heat. Today’s light is based on Light Emitting Diodes known as LED bulbs which are durable, power-saving and cheap in long run.
We are also told in our schooling to turn off the lights in the classroom before leaving it.
Moreover, if you plan to leave the home for more than a month or more, then you prefer to switch off the circuit breakers from the main electric panel of your house. But make sure that you don’t have any meat or vegetables inside your refrigerators.
Although, if you are running your own business then try to turn on the light when the consumer arrives. But it doesn’t mean that you would keep your light turned off all the time. Use light when needy, such as if you have a restaurant then power on the kitchen only when the consumer orders any food. If you own a warehouse then, try to use the focused beam lights to light only those areas where required.
3. Less use of electricity during Peak time.
The electricity bill meters that are installed nowadays in our homes are smart and based on IoT technologies. You may be surprised to know that the electricity that is consumed during peak hours or daytime is expensive as compared to the cost of energy during normal times. Yes, your electric company charges you more if you are using the electricity during those hours.
You must avoid using heavy-watt appliances during those times if you want to keep the electric bill down. In Pakistan, HESCO, K-Electric, LESCO & other electric companies double the charges per unit if you exceed 200 units per month.
4. Plug off the charger when your mobile is fully charged.
You must know that your mobile charger drains power even if your mobile is charged. Further, if you have also disconnected your mobile from the charging cable, and the charger is powered then it will still be consuming your electricity. This is a similar case to your laptop or notebook charger when it’s not charging.
To lower your power bill, always disconnect your power brick or power adapter when not charging your device. Or remove the plug from the socket when not in use.
5. Use sunlight as much as you can.
In-home and offices, sunlight can be used as the best source of light during the daytime. It's all-natural and has not any side effects when you are not directly exposed to it. During the daytime, you would be reducing electricity consumption while not using power lights.
6. Optimize the devices that are Rare in use.
We are talking about high-wattage electrical appliances that are luxury items for the comfort of your home zone. We highly recommend you optimize and set your Air conditioners according to the environment of the place where you live and Always use AC at 26 C° temperature during hot days. Although, it is also significant to keep the temperature steady. If your room temperature varies with a high difference, then you should paint your room or home with white color to keep it cool and reflect all the sunlight from absorbing.
Moreover, you can save money on electricity by installing Air conditioners that are based on DC inverter technology which are almost 80% power efficient as compared to traditional ACs. So, Inverter based electronic equipment uses less electricity. We also recommend you change your AC filters on a timely basis to improve the evaporation and cooling process.
Electric Iron should not be overheated and used accordingly as per the type and quality of clothes being pressed. Electric Heaters should be set to lower temperatures.
You must replace your old Water Pumps with DC water pumps or rotors that are more powerful in pumping out water whenever needed just by a single 12V battery.
Smart Microwave ovens, Electric Kettle, and Inverter based washing machines are available in the market that has made almost every work automatic with just the push of one button. They all have reduced the wastage of water, properly treated the waste when drained and consume less power from your grid.
We would prefer you to use the energy star appliances that have the energy star ratings on a sticker or out of the box to save on utilities
7. Use standardized cable in wiring.
There are varieties of wires available in the market. Make sure that the premium quality wire is installed in your home. And a professional electrician should be hired for wiring because the maximum length of a wire at a short distance also causes power and current losses. Copper wire is preferred over silver wires due to its high conductivity and low resistance to the Ampere current. A high-quality standard organization produces wire from 99.9% Pure Copper. The same goes for the motor machines that power your fans and rotors, as all of them must have Copper windings to reduce energy consumption.
8. Go For Solar Power.
Among all ways, we believe that this method will give you power and financial freedom to you if once installed for a lifetime. A solar panel has 25 years of life with 10 years of manufacturer warranty. They are silent, easy to maintain, environmentally friendly and produce cheap electricity. You can go for partial solar, which means Hybrid and Full solar to keep your electric bill low.
A 3KW of Solar plant is enough for powering a full house of about 1024 square yards. It can run 2 fans, 1 TV, 16 lights, 1 Refrigerator and necessary home appliances without any issue. The solar plant gives you clean and free energy from sunlight and you have no need to use electricity from grid stations if your plant is fulfilling all your needs. Not only this, but you can also sell out some extra energy on the grid through net metering to the grid company to earn you some money.
