Network Issues in Pakistan

The whole world is reaching the skylines through its telecom infrastructure, but Pakistan lags behind in this firm. It is the age where we will hardly find machines and objects that are not being guided by telecom devices. All our smart devices are powered via the internet, GPS, Bluetooth, GSM networks, NFC, and sensors. Telecommunication networks have an application from a single mobile device to military services. World mobile phones are now adopting the 5G technology, but Pakistani telecommunication companies are lacking to provide quality services to their consumers.

Pakistani governments in past have never drawn their concerns over the network providers, nor did space and telecom industries ever get attention to get sufficient funds. The telecom infrastructure became worse day by day and consumers faced technical issues. In the year 2017, the Pakistan government gave relief on several taxes and offered more services and relaxation to the telecom business startups that attracted International telecommunication corporations. Then Pakistan saw Telenor, Warid, Ufone, Paktel/Zong, Jazz, and Mobilink GSM as evolving companies to compete in telecom services.

There is a problem in the telecom policies that companies still stick to using the old equipment and most of the radars or antennas that are installed on mobile towers have now become obsolete and draw more power. Emergent up-gradation and maintenance are required because those 1G and 2G devices are now not in use, but they are running efficiently while consuming electricity. So, telecom companies should replace those antennas with new antennas which are energy-efficient, smaller in size, have good signal strength, low maintenance, and are cost-effective.

Even the PTA(Pakistan Telecommunication Authority) approved 4G mobile are being launched from world-renown smartphone manufacturers. But the people are facing signal issues due to old or low-quality radio antennas installed near them. Although, the locations where the signals are good in strength, the speed of network or internet data has remained the main issue. The public complains that the speed of the internet is slow and there are quality concerns about what kind of services are being provided at what price.

Lastly, there are also problems regarding telecom planning and coverage. Still in 2021, half of the towns do not have internet facilities. Besides government efforts, telecom companies are reluctant to install radio towers and invest in rural areas where users are numerically weaker and have a very low potential of profit from them.

There is a very high demand for Telecommunication engineers. Hence, telecom companies are finding it difficult to overcome their needs and are in search of highly skilled employees. The telecom companies operating in Pakistan are facing hard challenges in targeting the best engineers for their companies. Most of the telecom companies in Pakistan have high-end Engineering and managerial positions placed by a foreign person.

In a nutshell, the government in Pakistan is passing through hard times and reforming several technology-related policies to resolve the signals and internet demand issues. PTA has directed telecom companies to look after the basic network service issues. Efforts are being made but public opinion suggests that they are not being facilitated in a good manner. The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecom should address these hardware and service issues within a short period to secure the digital economy in a competitive environment where technology is evolving every second.
